In this class, students will develop an understanding of key chemical principles. Over the course of the year, we will explore fundamental topics in general chemistry through a combination of textbook study, in-class problem solving sessions, and biweekly labs. Topics of study will include atoms, molecules, chemical reactions, bonding, gases, liquids, solids, solutions, equilibrium, acids and bases, and organic chemistry. Successful participants will have completed Algebra I prior to enrollment.
NOTE: This class meets for an additional 1-hr every other week to accommodate lab time. The class on September 8, 2006 will run until 3:30pm, September 15, 2006 will run until 4:30pm, and so on through the end of the year.
Instructor: Angelika St. Laurent
Instructor Bio: Angelika St.Laurent was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany. She studied Biology at the University of Hamburg. In 2002, Angelika moved to Ithaca for a Post Doctoral position at Cornell. Angelika has two children she homeschooled through eighth grade. In her free time, she enjoys walking her dog, gardening, indulging in the fiber arts, and writing a novel.
