The year is 1400. Old powers and cultures are dying: European Christendom and the Mongol Empire are both splintering; the Byzantine Empire barely exists; and Ancestral Puebloans are abandoning their cities due to prolonged droughts. But new empires and alliances are rising: the Ming in China, Aztecs in Mexico, Incas in Peru, the Mali Empire and Great Zimbabwe in Africa, and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in our own backyards. Meanwhile, artists and scholars rediscover ancient classics of Greece & Rome. What happens next? This class will look at world history during Early Modern times using the The Human Odyssey, Vol. 2 textbook and supplemental readings, class discussion, activities, plus a few projects, presentations and/or reports.
