Classics to Contemporary Literature

With works from Sophocles, Shakespeare, Bronte, Achebe, and more, we’ll read, analyze, perform scenes, and thoroughly immerse ourselves in great literature through the ages. We’ll delve into historical context, discuss themes and interpretations, and find evidence in the text to support our ideas. This class is suitable for more mature teens due to the challenging adult texts, rigorous reading schedule, and regular writing assignments.

Book List*:
Sophocles: Oedipus Rex
Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet
Emily Bronte: Wuthering Heights
Chinua Achebe: Things Fall Apart
Oscar Wilde: The Importance of Being Earnest

Jason Reynolds & Brendan Kiely: All American Boys
William Goldman: The Princess Bride
Elizabeth Acevedo: The Poet X

*This list has now been finalized. In addition to these books, there will be some short stories, poetry, and other minor works distributed in class.
