- Brief history of the genre to distinguish it from decorative art & flower painting
- Close observation of plant forms and their various parts
- Examination of native flora w/magnifier
- Depiction of light and dark tones
- Composition choices
- Watercolor techniques from pale washes to saturation, broad shapes to small details
- Demonstration
- Hands on practice
- Individual guidance
- Evaluating and critiquing the work

Instructor: Milly Acharya
Instructor Bio: As a botanical illustrator I aim at complete and accurate documentation of the plant specimen I’ve chosen to portray and to communicate this information to the viewer. I’m a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, have exhibited extensively, and won several honors and awards, including the 2011 Diane Bouchier Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in botanical art. Required Materials: hand-held magnifying glass (needs to be 3-5xs w/ 5 being preferable); flat white pallet, such as a dish or plastic tray; hot press watercolor pad (prefer 9″ x 12″); rag
Additional Materials Fee: $45 to cover the cost of paints, brushes, and other materials
